Ever wondered how your penny-pinching lifestyle comes across to potential partners? Worried that whipping out a coupon on the first date might kill the vibe? You’re not alone—we’ve had the same thought. So we teamed up with Talker News to find out exactly how frugality lands in the world of modern dating. And who better to share this with than our fellow Cash Back and savings enthusiasts?
We surveyed 2,000 U.S. adults aged 18 and over, and what we found might surprise you.
First Impressions: Deal Hunters Win Hearts
When it comes to first impressions, being budget-savvy may actually boost your romantic appeal. Nearly 6 in 10 people (59%) said they’d be likely to date someone who frequently looks for deals—whether it's clipping coupons, scouting Cash Back offers or finding the best happy hour specials.
Turns out, frugality can be a green flag.
Coupons on a First Date? Yes, Please.
Far from being a turn-off, smart saving strategies are earning respect. Over half of respondents said they admire people who use a coupon on a first date. Even more applaud tactics like choosing a happy hour spot or cashing in reward points.
In other words, flexing your budgeting skills isn’t just acceptable—it’s attractive.
The Cost of Financial Incompatibility
But not all stories have a savings-happy ending. Money matters can still be a relationship dealbreaker. A striking 46% of Americans reported having experienced relationship tension due to financial incompatibility, and 27% said money differences were the reason for a breakup.
So while being financially strategic can bring you closer, not having the same values can quickly pull a relationship apart.
