If a northern lights adventure has been on your bucket list, then you’re in luck. Experts predict 2024 to be the best time in years to catch the phenomenon. (Sky watchers apparently have an even better chance to see the show during the spring equinox, FYI.) Not to mention you’ll find cheaper flight and hotel deals for hot spots like Iceland, Norway and Alaska in March. Guided northern lights tours are also available to book on Expedia.
Road Trip Along the Northern Pacific Coast
You’re probably familiar with the California Pacific Coast Highway, but some of the most beautiful stretches can be found along Highway 101 in Oregon and Washington. From Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach to Cape Disappointment State Park in Washington, you won’t miss out on scenery—and you’ll find better car rental and hotel deals since it’s off-season. While you’re there you can also take a detour to the San Juan Islands in Washington where you can go whale watching and enjoy farm-to-table dining.
Hit the Sand
If you’re a dedicated beach bunny, the Florida Keys tend to have decent hotel rates during shoulder season, and the weather is infinitely better than summer, hovering around the mid to upper 70s during the day. If you prefer the West Coast, San Diego is an affordable option for beachgoers with destinations like La Jolla and Coronado—as for nightlife, check out the historic Gaslamp Quarter.
Enjoy Lakefront Views at Coeur d’Alene
Situated just 39 miles from Spokane International Airport, the city of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho is as relaxing as it is breathtaking. The main attraction, of course, is Lake Coeur d’Alene, where you can find plenty of waterfront hotels and stroll the quaint downtown. If you go in March keep in mind it will still be a bit chilly, but that’s all the more reason to book a Scenic Hot Cocoa Cruise (it runs every weekend) and take in the views along Lake Coeur d’Alene.
Tour the Art Galleries in Santa Fe
Early spring is one of the least crowded tourist seasons in Santa Fe, New Mexico—which means you can enjoy some quiet time while also paying less for flights and hotels. Be sure to take a walk along Canyon Road to hit up the city’s art galleries. Of course, your trip won’t be complete until you try some of the state’s famed green chili (we recommend green chili stew). If time allows, rent a car and take a road trip around The Enchanted Circle, a scenic byway that takes you along mesas, valleys and forests.
Book a Caribbean Cruise
If you’re looking for an affordable cruise getaway, the Caribbean is a great choice. With miles of white-sand beaches and turquoise waters, it’s the perfect tropical escape. Book a snorkeling tour or shop for souvenirs at an open-air market. And if that all sounds too exhausting, there’s nothing wrong with relaxing on the beach while sipping a mojito.
Visit a National Park
One of the cheapest ways to travel is to spend time in the great outdoors. While parks in the northern half of the US are likely still blanketed in snow come early spring, you can seek warmer temps down south. Our recommendation? Book a flight through Expedia to Midland Airport in Texas, where you can then rent a car and take a scenic ride to Big Bend National Park. The expansive park has everything from hiking trails, horseback riding and river trips.
Joshua Tree National Park in California is another potential spring break destination. Although if you’re looking to escape the crowds, then go with Big Bend.
Shred the Slopes
Ski season may be coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have your last hurrah. If you think a ski trip is out of your budget, then skip the big-name resorts. For instance, Brian Head Resort in Utah offers lift tickets for as low as $45 during spring break season along with less expensive accommodation options. Plus, it’s only about 14 miles from Cedar City Regional Airport. Another affordable spot is Sugar Mountain Resort in North Carolina, which offers discount end-of-season tickets in March.
